Vampire Lovers Dark Side 207

Although Nightmare At 20,000 Feet is a Twilight Zone episode I’ve painted it in the style used for Rod Serling’s later show, Night Gallery. This series featured a collection of abstract horror paintings (mostly by Tom Wright) that made a big impact on me as kid but by the time I got around to doing my own horror illustrations (40 years later!) photo realism was in vogue and commercial artists were all busily tracing away like loonies.
As a traditional oil painter I was at a disadvantage creating this type of artwork but I kept my DVD covers etc as clean as possible (the linework, not the subject matter!) even though oil paint is a notoriously tough medium to lay on neat.
Nowadays however, I’ve pretty much retired from commercial illustration and my artwork has become a lot more painterly and abstract which means you’re getting a lot more oil paint for your money because I’m really laying it on thick!
I think these ‘wet on wet’ pieces are amongst the best work I’ve ever done and really suit the horror genre. Hopefully you’ll all agree and gobble up prints of Nightmare At 20,000 feet which is my tribute to the scariest half hour of television ever made. Hey, it certainly had me filling my 8 year old pants!
