Marilyn Alla Prima

These alla prima paintings drive me nuts because I never know when they’re done. Looking back at the Kylie Minogue one I did a couple of months ago, I can see a dozen things I should have fixed before calling it a day. Then last week I spent ages fussing away on a Sharon Tate alla prima and proceeded to knock a lot of the power out of it.

On this Marilyn Monroe piece I restricted myself to ten hours (a grueling 10 hours!) and like the Kylie painting I’m fighting the urge to go back in and tidy it all up. But of course, alla prima paintings are all about capturing the moment and I think this one nails Marilyn’s raw sex appeal pretty good. I’m certainly glad that I left the Kylie one a bit rough (not that Kylie Minogue’s rough!) and hopefully this piece will be as popular.
