When I was a kid my big ambition was to one day paint covers for Famous Monsters Of Filmland like Basil Gogos. Then one day I walked into my local Super Save in Great Falls, Montana, spotted Frank Frazetta’s ‘Egyptian Queen’ gracing the front of Eerie magazine and I just wanted to paint sexy women like Frank. I’ve got some way to go before I reach the level of those two artistic giants but sometimes I stand back from my easle and think “You know, Rick; you might not be a million miles off”.
Then I go and get half a dozen commercial art jobs slung back at me and swiftly come back to earth!
But I’m proud of this painting, and even though few magazines nowadays go for oil painted covers I like to think it could have squeaked onto a ‘Famous Monsters’ back in 1960. But only after I’d slipped so much speed into Basil’s coffee that the XXXXer couldn’t hold his brush!
