I normally relax by nipping down to my nearest lake and hooking myself in the back of the head with my fly rod. Thanks to the lockdown I can’t do that so I slink off down to my studio with a cob on and paint. I suppose I better explain for the benefit of my American customers that ‘cob on’ is slang for a bad mood, not what you’re thinking! That’s what we call a ‘lob on’ and getting one of those nowadays is a real novelty!
Anyway, unlike the Suzi paintings, these alla prima pieces are quite a bit more relaxing to do because if I muck one up and it dies a death it’s not the end of the world. When Suzi paintings die a death I have a humungous hissy fit and go to bed with a huge cob on. Once again, that means a bad mood. If it was the other sort of ‘on’ I’d be laying on my back and Sally would be a whole lot happier!
